Approaching Oblivion (Featuring Tom Kraus)

about

Instrumental Rock featuring the acoustic and electric guitar work of Tom Kraus (Prophet Code, FORMATIV).

The challenge of instrumental music is to convey ideas without lyrics to guide the listener. Movie soundtracks in particular use this concept to cue the audience as to what they should be feeling based on what is happening on the screen. I sometimes use this technique to play a movie in my head as a song is developed.

The idea behind this song is dealing with conflicting emotions as life changes approach. While you cannot always control events, you can control how you react to them - trying to plot a course through the storm and get to the other side.

Tom was the perfect guitar player for this piece as he interpreted the various sections with little input from me. His sense of melody and timing is uncanny as the song unfolds. He achieved the perfect balance between control and chaos as the themes of the song evolve.
